Entertainment Weekly

Promising to be the debut novel of the season The Silent Patient is a shocking psychological thriller of a woman’s act of violence against her husband—and of the therapist obsessed with uncovering her motive…

Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening her husband Gabriel returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face, and then never speaks another word.

Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety. The price of her art skyrockets, and she, the silent patient, is hidden away from the tabloids and spotlight at the Grove, a secure forensic unit in North London.

Theo Faber is a criminal psychotherapist who has waited a long time for the opportunity to work with Alicia. His determination to get her to talk and unravel the mystery of why she shot her husband takes him down a twisting path into his own motivations—a search for the truth that threatens to consume him....

It would have been more fun to read if so many reviews had not mentioned that it had a twist. The whole idea of a twist is that you don’t know one is coming.

While well written the novel lumbers along. Admit-fully the end is a twist but it labored to get there.
  • The ending is...okay.

For someone’s first book I’m impressed. Excellent writing and story telling. As for the plot...well, there’s a lot of anticipation for the final reveal only to give itself away too soon. Honestly, the journey was riveting until that point. Nonetheless a promising writer with more great work ahead.

  • Slow and Unsatisfying

I’m all for a twist but this book took forever. I found it tiresome to read. The plot was cumbersome. The work of reading it wasn’t rewarded with anything remarkably gratifying. This book is not a quarter as sexy as it’s synopsis promised.

This was by far the best $14 I've ever spent on a book. This author is magical!!! Extremely intelligent, well written, masterful story teller. Had me on the edge of my seat glued to each page until the very last page. This book should get 50 stars. The end will leave you screaming for more!!! However it will not disappoint the twists and turns are not expected yet delightfully clever. I'm so excited for more
