The Hunting Party that is author Lucy Foley’s first foray into the thriller genre. is a murder mystery involving a group of millennial, Oxford graduates meeting up with each other after a number of years to spend a few days partying at some mansion in Scotland in time for the New Year, which is an annual event. The good points that the book has is it’s strong characterisation of its main characters, even if some of them are unlike able and annoying. It is also well paced, segueing from one characters point of view to another in order to shape the events of the mystery narrative. The location in particular plays a key part in the story, acting as the appropriate background for the unfolding events of the characters deteriorating relationships. The atmosphere is also perfectly captured, with its snowy vistas. The only weaknesses the book has is that the ending felt rushed and abrupt, with a disappointing climax. It’s also quite plodding at times, with a lot of filler involving the main characters talking nonsense. I would recommend this book, only if you would put the time and patience into reading it. I look forward to the next one.

Absolutely loved this book. Best read in ages! Loved the plot, the characters and the twists and turns. The setting is well thought out too. If you haven’t read it. Do!!

As I decided to get the sample of the book first, I was hooked on the interesting plot idea and entangling storyline which I could not get out of But then I reached a point were this book lost all its magical addictive powers and I just was not interested Sorry but I wouldn’t recommend this book to people because I know that there are much better crime novels than this and that this book didn’t even touch the standards I have for a must-read good book that I would recommend to everyone
  • Enjoyable but slow

The characters were a bit meh. At times it was hard to remember who was who because they were quite similar. And they weren’t really fleshed out. The character development was a little clunky. Plot twists weren’t a shock to me personally. Quite slow paced and I think the murderer having a personality disorder wasn’t the most tasteful approach (especially with stigmatisation of them yet the push for care in terms of mental health). But good for a debut novel!! Enjoyable read all the same.

Back to front who done it where the victim is not revealed until the very end! Made a refreshing change which was even better due to the excellent writing.
  • Loved it!

What a great read! Amazing twists at the end that I didn’t see coming. The whole time you’re kept guessing. Would make a great film. Thumbs up from me.

Not enough grip in this book to keep me reading. I stopped half way through. Characters were all over the place.

Zero geographical research., terrible dialogue, 6th form prose, plus characters and plot from a build your own story kit.
