'Hilarious, compelling, painful, enlightening, honest. I loved it' - Dolly Alderton

'A deliciously funny, characterful, topical and thrilling novel for our times' - Bernardine Evaristo, WINNER OF THE MAN BOOKER PRIZE

Meet Queenie.

She just can't cut a break. Well, apart from one from her long term boyfriend, Tom. That's just a break though. Definitely not a break up. Stuck between a boss who doesn't seem to see her, a family who don't seem to listen (if it's not Jesus or water rates, they're not interested), and trying to fit in two worlds that don't really understand her, it's no wonder she's struggling.

She was named to be queen of everything. So why is she finding it so hard to rule her own life?

A darkly comic and bitingly subversive take on life, love, race and family, Queenie will have you nodding in recognition, crying in solidarity and rooting for this unforgettable character every step of the way.

Perfect for fans of Dolly Alderton, Sally Rooney, Diana Evans and Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

'This is an important, timely and disarming novel, thirst-quenching and long overdue: one that will be treasured by "any type of black girl" and hordes of other readers besides.' - Guardian

  • The book we didn’t know we needed and now couldn’t live without

Outstanding. Read in a day (pausing only to make cups of tea). I cannot wait to see what other outstanding novels Candice releases. 10/10
  • Every London girl can relate

This book is so real and clever. I absolutely adore the characters in this book. I felt like one of Queenie’s friends and wanted to shake her awake and comfort her all at once. I don’t think there is a girl in London who couldn’t relate to Queenie. This book made laugh out loud; cry and want to seriously talk about mental health for everyone not just the privileged. Beautifully written.

An excellent portrait of a young woman who’s lost her way in her mid-20s. Queenie’s undeniable strength is nearly her downfall but it was beautiful to be there on her journey as she discovers being vulnerable doesn’t need to mean being weak. Her unique experience as a black woman navigating a world of being fetishised romantically and grappling with a white media job that doesn’t necessarily support her passion about #blacklivesmatter is an important point of view for everyone to be exposed to. There’s a lot to learn from Queenie for women of all backgrounds and walks of life. A truly powerful and beautiful story.

The book was good as far as being a young black Caribbean female from south east London. It was nice to relate to some culture. What I didn’t quite get was how normalised it was for Queenie to lack self worth by continuously sleeping with all these men who don’t respect her and put her down. Kyazike’s over use of slang was also a bit cringey. Otherwise a good, relatable read.

What a gloriously detailed and clear and fresh portrait. I cried and learned and laughed and felt like I was going to have a panic attack on the overground a couple of times but in a good way. Thank you for the insight into the specific challenges faced by women of colour in terms of mental health and dating. Important reading!

Really enjoyed reading this book, related to it in such a way that I was able to match my own friends to Queenie’s in the story. I became instantly addicted to this book not wanting to put it down for a second and now it’s finished I’m sad, I want more but I’m happy Queenie has her happy ending.
